Carmelo Morgante, joint winner 2023, has signed a joint patent protecting an innovative idea to develop a novel nanofiltration membrane based on metal-organic frameworks and low-cost materials. This membrane has a high positive surface charge that allows for the highly selective rejection of magnesium from all other ions present in seawater/desalination brine. Such a membrane has the potential to revolutionize seawater/brine mining schemes by enabling the recovery of high-purity magnesium, which could significantly reduce capital and operating costs while increasing revenue.
